"We will walk and live in the breathtaking wilderness beside the iMfolozi River, home of elephants, rhinos and other fascinating animals, attuning ourselves to the rhythms of nature, cooking around a fire, walking trails, sleeping under the stars.
As the wilderness works it's magic on us, Ani Tsondru will share The Work That Reconnects, helping us to reconnect with our truest nature. Guided meditation will offer us tools that empower us to bring back home the peace and joy we discover in nature and to enjoy them in our daily lives." (Roy Ashton)
The Wilderness Within is centred on the experience of living in the iMfolozi Wilderness, the oldest protected area in Southern Africa, sacred to the Zulu people and protected before the colonial era. Now a part of the iMfolozi-Hluhluwe Game Reserve, this wilderness area contains no roads or structures, only nature in its fullest expression. It is only accessible on foot, and is highly protected. When we visit, we practice a high level of leave-no-trace, minimum-impact camping and principles of respecting the land and the animals with whom we’re sharing the space.
A Wilderness Within Experience is an opportunity to completely disengage from everything we know in “civilisation” in our busy, stressful lives. We enter a different world, an ancient world that our ancestors knew, where the rules are not those made by humans. We leave behind watches and cell phones, and enter the rhythm of the African bush where the sun and the stars are our time. In this world, we slow down, and enter the freshness of the present moment.
Immersing ourselves in the wilderness brings us wonder, joy and peace. With awareness, we can discover these qualities within ourselves – our own inner wilderness. With the privilege of Ani Tsondru’s guidance, we will explore the meeting place of outer and inner worlds. There will be time for solitude, walking together, relaxing together. As the wilderness works its magic on us, Ani Tsondru will offer simple guided meditations, and material from The Work that Reconnects, helping us get in touch with our own truest nature. She will offer us tools that empower us to bring back home the peace and joy we discover in nature, and to live them every day.
For every Wilderness Within trail that we fill, we fund a place on a wilderness trail for a participant who would not be able to afford it. Where possible, these are members of villages close to iMfolozi Game Reserve, who may never get the chance to go inside and experience its beauty and importance.
